IPC Reinstates Russia and Belarus for 2026 Paralympics

Eligibility now rests with independent sport federations that continue to bar athletes from the two countries.

Overview

  • IPC members meeting in Seoul voted 91–77 to lift the partial suspensions and restore the Russian and Belarusian national Paralympic committees as full members.
  • Formal readmission allows national-team participation under each country’s flag at Milan–Cortina 2026 if athletes are ultimately cleared to enter.
  • International federations for Para-Alpine, Para-Nordic, Para-Snowboard, Para-Biathlon, Para-Ice Hockey and Wheelchair Curling still control athlete licensing for 2025/26 and currently maintain suspensions.
  • The IPC said it will work with both committees on practical steps for a potential return ahead of the March 6–15, 2026 Paralympic Winter Games in Italy.
  • The ruling contrasts with the IOC’s neutral-only stance for the 2026 Olympics, and Russia’s Paralympic Committee hailed it as a “fair decision.”
