iPadOS 26.2 Beta 3 Restores Drag-and-Drop Slide Over and Split View on iPad
Apple is refining iPad multitasking in response to user feedback ahead of a December public release.
Overview
- The latest beta re-enables dragging apps from the Dock, Spotlight, and the App Library to create Slide Over panes or tiled views by targeting the left, right, or center of the screen.
- New morphing previews show whether a dragged app will open as Slide Over, in a tiled Split View-like layout, or as a full window.
- Dropping an app over an existing tile or Slide Over pane swaps it into place while preserving the prior app so it is available again after closing the new one.
- Slide Over remains limited without multi-app stacks and functions only within the new windowing mode, not in Full Screen Apps mode.
- After removing classic multitasking in iPadOS 26 and reviving a basic Slide Over in 26.1, Apple is widening restored workflows in 26.2, which it says will roll out publicly in December.
