Iowa State Turns to Offensive Lineman for Kickoff After Kicker Injury vs. Colorado

Injuries have left the Cyclones thin at kicker, creating uncertainty for near-term special teams decisions.

Overview

  • Backup Chase Smith appeared to be hurt on the opening kickoff of the second half and limped off the field.
  • Smith later made a PAT and had earlier hit a 38-yard field goal, but he did not take the next kickoff.
  • Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Carson Rhodes, a former Nevada High School soccer player, executed the ensuing kickoff to beyond the 20-yard line.
  • Starter Kyle Konrardy has been out since Sept. 13, and Smith’s availability going forward remains unclear.
  • No. 22 Iowa State lost 24-17 at Colorado to drop to 5-2 and will have a bye before hosting No. 18 BYU on Oct. 25.
