Overview
- Victims’ families lodged a formal complaint after IOPC regional director Derrick Campbell began their March 2024 meeting with a prayer they found patronising and offensive.
- Campbell, who serves as the IOPC’s director of engagement and is also a church pastor, had overseen investigations into police actions before Valdo Calocane’s June 2023 attack.
- The IOPC confirmed it has received the grievance and is handling it under its complaints and feedback procedure, with the case currently at the assessment stage.
- Earlier this year the watchdog identified 11 failings in the police probe into Calocane’s May 2023 assault and reopened its inquiry after uncovering discrepancies in officers’ accounts.
- A two-year public inquiry chaired by retired judge Deborah Taylor is scheduled to examine the roles of police, prosecutors and health services in the lead-up to the Nottingham attacks.
