Overview
- The IOC confirmed on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, that Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, South Africa and Turkiye are in continuous dialogue as Interested Parties for the 2036 Summer Games.
- Those seven parties have been invited to make virtual presentations to the IOC’s Future Host Commission in November and other National Olympic Committees have until Oct. 31, 2026 to join the current stage.
- The IOC published a 30-page guidance document that lays out the assessment criteria and a timetable that calls for an Executive Board shortlist in March 2027, feasibility and strategic dialogue phases, targeted dialogue in late 2028 and a final member vote in mid-2029.
- Bids will be judged on venue master plans, athlete experience, funding strategy, political and public support, delivery capability and legacy, with specific issues already noted such as India’s Ahmedabad centring of its project and Qatar’s likely need to move the Games off the July–August calendar because of heat.
- The move reverses the recent fast-track approach used for Brisbane 2032 by restoring a contested, member-voted process and could reshape host selection politics and scheduling for future Games.
