IOC Finalizes Record-Breaking LA28 Olympic Program with 351 Medal Events

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will feature expanded mixed-gender competitions, new sports, and a historic majority of female athletes.

  • The International Olympic Committee has approved a record 351 medal events for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, including new mixed-gender team events in gymnastics, track and field, golf, and more.
  • For the first time in Olympic history, female athletes will outnumber male athletes, comprising 50.7% of the total athlete quota.
  • The Olympic women’s soccer tournament will expand to 16 teams, surpassing the men’s competition, which will be reduced to 12 teams.
  • New events include sprint swimming races (50m backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly) and five additional sports: baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse, and squash.
  • Kirsty Coventry, set to become the first female IOC president in June, co-chaired the board meeting that approved these transformative changes.
