IOC Approves Qualification Pathway for Cricket's Return to LA 2028

A system that ensures continental representation through ranking cut-offs, sets a conditional US host place, introduces an eight-team ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027 to award the final berths.

Overview

  • The IOC Executive Board published the formal LA28 cricket qualification system on Monday, June 29, confirming separate six-team T20 tournaments for men and women with 15-player squads and 28 combined matches.
  • Four women's teams — Australia, Great Britain (via England), India and South Africa — have already qualified through the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup while the USA women remain outside an automatic host berth because they are not yet inside the ICC top 15.
  • Men's direct qualification will be decided by ICC T20I rankings on 31 December 2026 with one highest-ranked eligible NOC from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania each securing places and the USA holding a conditional host slot if it reaches the top 15 during the ranking window.
  • The final spot in each tournament will be decided at a newly created ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027 featuring eight teams, and if the West Indies are among eligible teams a separate Caribbean NOC qualifier will determine which IOC-recognised nation advances.
  • All Olympic cricket matches are planned for a purpose-built venue in Pomona, and officials say the qualification design aims to combine competitive standards with wider global representation while giving nations clear timelines to prepare.
