IOC Approves LA28 Hockey Pathway as FIH Names Hyderabad Host for 2026 World Cup Qualifier

India’s women must qualify at the March Hyderabad event after missing the Asia Cup berth.

Overview

  • The IOC has ratified a 12-team format per gender for LA28 with the United States qualifying as host, and Carson Fields in Los Angeles set to be converted into the hockey venue.
  • FIH Pro League winners from the 2025–26 and 2026–27 seasons will earn Olympic places, with the 2026–27 runner-up qualifying if the same team tops both seasons.
  • Continental champions will qualify if not already in as host or via the Pro League, with the next-best finisher advancing when a Pro League qualifier also wins its continental title.
  • Four Olympic Qualification Tournaments in early 2028—two per gender with eight teams each—will award the final berths, with the top two from each event progressing to LA28.
  • FIH confirmed the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, including Hyderabad on March 8–14 featuring India, England, Scotland, Korea, Italy, Uruguay, Wales and Austria, with seven spots decided across two events using pool play, semifinals, third-place matches and a highest-ranked fourth-place tiebreak.
