Investigators Test Link to Earlier Murder in Killing of Armenian Opposition Community Chief

Investigators are evaluating several theories without naming a primary motive.

Overview

  • Volodya Grigoryan, head of the enlarged Parakar community and an opposition figure, was shot dead near his home overnight in Parakar.
  • A friend of Grigoryan who served in the criminal police was also killed and another person was wounded, with the attacker described as masked and gloved before fleeing.
  • Armenia’s Investigative Committee said several versions are under review, including a possible connection to a killing in the village of Merdzavan months earlier.
  • Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan condemned the attack and said the Interior Ministry must solve the crime.
  • Grigoryan won his post in March over a candidate from the ruling Civil Contract party and belonged to Aprelu Erkir, whose leader Ruben Vardanyan is imprisoned in Azerbaijan.
