Overview

• The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as 16-year-old Alina Safi of Concord’s Mt. Diablo High School.
• Walnut Creek police say Safi’s silver Prius veered into oncoming traffic near Oak Grove Road at about 4:40 p.m. Saturday and struck a Jeep Wrangler before igniting.
• Four other people from both vehicles were hospitalized, including a juvenile airlifted to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital with undisclosed injuries.
• Social media footage of the crash has prompted local calls for K-rails along the median-less stretch of Ygnacio Valley Road to prevent wrong-way collisions.
• Investigators have not determined whether speed, alcohol or drugs played a role and are asking anyone with information to contact Walnut Creek police.
