Investigators Probe Fatal Moose Crash on Denali Park Highway

The National Park Service is coordinating with the Bulgarian embassy to inform the driver’s next of kin.

Overview

  • The collision occurred around 1 a.m. on Aug. 1 at the 378.2 km marker of the George Parks Highway just south of Denali National Park’s entrance.
  • The 24-year-old Bulgarian driver was pronounced dead at the scene and his 24-year-old passenger from North Macedonia was taken to a Fairbanks hospital with undisclosed injuries.
  • The National Park Service continues its probe with no new updates on the injured passenger’s status or the fate of the moose.
  • Park officials have issued safety tips urging motorists to slow down in low-light conditions, use high beams when possible and watch for animal eye shine at dawn and dusk.
  • Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game records more than 800 moose-vehicle collisions each year and notes adult moose can weigh up to 590 kg and stand nearly 2 m tall.
