Overview
- On July 28 at around 11:15 a.m., a barge struck a sailboat carrying five children and an adult near Hibiscus Island, causing the vessel to capsize.
- Emergency crews recovered all occupants and transported them to Jackson Memorial Hospital where 7-year-old Mila Yankelevich and a 13-year-old girl were pronounced dead.
- Two other girls, aged 8 and 11, remain in critical condition at the hospital while the remaining survivors received care at the Miami Yacht Club.
- The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and U.S. Coast Guard have launched joint investigations to determine the causes of the collision.
