Investigation Finds At Least 60 Russian Conscripts Killed in Kursk Offensive, Over 60 Missing

The investigation challenges earlier assurances that conscripts were kept from combat.

Overview

  • Vazhnyye Istorii identified the deaths and said more than 60 others are likely missing in the Kursk region, drawing on media reports, relatives’ social posts, and inheritance registries.
  • The conscripts came from 34 Russian regions and were very young, with an average age of about 20.
  • Nearly half of the fatalities occurred in the first week of the Ukrainian operation, including five from the 30th Artillery Brigade killed in Novoivanovka on August 6, with additional losses on August 7 and 10.
  • Many of the dead served in the 488th Regiment (unit 12721, Klintsy), and about 20 more deaths were recorded in September, including seven reportedly at a school used to house conscripts in Vesyoloye near the border.
  • Russian authorities have not commented, and the findings align with but differ from earlier tallies by BBC Russian Service, Meduza and volunteers, as well as a Ukrainian project that published 217 conscript names by April 2025.
