Interpol Africa Sting Nets 260 in Romance-Scam and Sextortion Crackdown

A UK-funded, private-sector-assisted sweep across 14 countries targeted networks exploiting social and dating platforms.

Overview

  • Conducted July 28–August 11, Operation Contender 3.0 coordinated police actions across Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia.
  • Authorities reported 260 arrests, the seizure of 1,235 electronic devices and the takedown of 81 malicious infrastructures.
  • Interpol linked the disrupted schemes to nearly 1,500 identified victims with estimated losses of about $2.8 million.
  • Ghana reported 68 arrests, 835 devices seized and 108 victims losing $450,000, with roughly $70,000 recovered.
  • Investigators say scammers used forged identities, fake profiles and stolen images, with sextortion involving secretly recorded explicit chats; Group-IB and Trend Micro provided investigative support.
