Overview
- International Museum Day, which falls on Sunday, May 17, brings free or reduced entry and special programs to hundreds of museums nationwide.
- The national opening took place at KohleWelt in Oelsnitz in Saxony, where culture minister Barbara Klepsch called museums places of learning and participation.
- Regional lineups are broad, with more than 100 sites in Brandenburg and 33 museums plus three memorials in Berlin offering tours, workshops and family events.
- In Thuringia, association chief Roland Krischke said museums still lack a decision on this year's 400,000 euro project grants, leaving small institutions unsure which exhibitions or hires can proceed.
- The day is organized by the International Council of Museums under the theme “Museums uniting a divided world,” highlighting museums’ civic role and outreach.
