International Experts Begin Sixth On-Site Review of Polavaram Dam

The three-member panel is scrutinizing critical components to inform an observations report that will require a formal compliance reply.

  • Sean Hinchberger, David B. Paul and Gianfranco De Cicco opened a three-day inspection on Monday, marking their sixth visit to the project.
  • Day one covered Gap-1 and Gap-2, D Hill and G Hill, the main dam’s upstream and downstream sections, the diaphragm wall, the dewatering channel, and rock fill and clay stockpiles.
  • Consultant AFRY presented design details to the team during the site review.
  • Officials from the Central Water Commission, CSMRS, CWPRS, the Polavaram Project Authority, the Andhra Pradesh Water Resources Department and MEIL accompanied and briefed the experts.
  • The next two days will focus on the ECRF Gap-2 sand reach, material availability, the ECRF dam plan, spill channel and approach channel, with a follow-up observations report to be issued and a compliance report to be submitted by authorities; the team is slated to meet state and central officials through January 22 before further discussions in New Delhi.
