Internal ICE Dataset Reveals 220,000 Arrests Through Oct. 15, With Nearly 75,000 Lacking Criminal Records

UC Berkeley researchers obtained the internal records through a lawsuit following the halt in public ICE data.

Overview

  • Newly released ICE records show nearly one in three people arrested between Jan. 20 and Oct. 15 had no criminal record, undercutting the administration’s stated focus on dangerous offenders.
  • The dataset excludes Border Patrol arrests and does not indicate how many arrests led to deportations, though 22,959 cases are categorized as voluntary departures.
  • Mexicans make up the largest group in the records at about 85,000, followed by Guatemala at roughly 31,000 and Honduras at about 24,000, with about 90% of those arrested being men and most in working age.
  • ICE operations have recently intensified in Democratic-led cities such as New Orleans and the Twin Cities, where authorities report new arrests.
  • DHS did not respond to requests for comment, and public figures indicate ICE is currently holding about 65,000 people in detention.
