Interior Ministry Draft Seeks €46 ID Card Fee for Over-24s

The ministry says the higher charge would recover costs to relieve issuing offices.

Overview

  • The plan would raise the fee for a Personalausweis from €37 to €46 for applicants aged 24 and over, with the measure still at draft stage and not yet decided.
  • A €6 charge would apply if the digital photo is taken at the authority under the proposed rules.
  • Fees for those under 24 would remain €22.80, and the Bundespolizei’s emergency travel document would rise from €8 to €32.
  • The Interior Ministry estimates the changes would add €9.8 million per year to citizens’ costs to make issuance more cost-covering for authorities.
  • The proposal comes as state-owned Bundesdruckerei reports a €160.4 million 2023 profit, rising ID-related revenue, delayed PointID deliveries, and high executive pay under public scrutiny.
