Overview

  • The Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz’s May classification of the AfD as a “secured right-wing extremist endeavor” remains paused pending the party’s legal challenge.
  • At their Bremerhaven conference, state and federal interior ministers agreed to form a working group to assess the implications of a confirmed extremist ruling on civil service eligibility and firearms permits.
  • Ministers ruled out pursuing a full party ban, instead opting for individual case assessments of AfD-affiliated public servants and gun owners.
  • Four AfD state branches—Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg—are already labeled extremist by regional offices, while other states maintain them at the suspicion level.
  • The conference also approved expanding electronic ankle monitors for violent ex-partners to improve protection of women against domestic violence.
