InterDigital Sues Disney for €101.7 Million Over HDR Patent

The claim increases pressure on both companies to reach a licensing deal that could determine whether disabled HDR, 4K and casting features are restored.

Overview

  • InterDigital filed the €101.7 million damages claim at the Munich regional court on Monday, seeking payment for alleged use of its HDR patent from Disney+ from March 2020 to the end of 2025.
  • The suit stems from European patent EP 2 132 923, which covers HDR image‑quality technology including the dynamic Dolby Vision format that Disney bundled in a higher‑priced Premium tier.
  • Munich judges already found infringement in November 2025 and ordered Disney to stop using the technology, and separate orders from the Unified Patent Court in Düsseldorf have since led Disney to disable 4K, HDR formats and Google Cast in affected markets.
  • InterDigital says streams from a server farm near Frankfurt served subscribers in 19 other European countries, and it claims Disney paid no license fees while charging roughly €5 more for the Premium plan that included Dolby Vision.
  • The case could force a large payout or a licensing deal and has immediate consumer effects through reduced video quality and canceled features while multiple related patent actions and negotiations continue.
