Intensifying Westerly System to Bring Rain, Thunderstorms and Mountain Snow Across Pakistan Next Week

PDMA warns travelers to expect poor visibility, with possible road closures.

Overview

  • PMD says a westerly system now over Pakistan will persist through January 19 before strengthening from January 20 to 23 and expanding its reach.
  • Through January 19, intermittent rain with thunderstorms and light to moderate snowfall is forecast for upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.
  • From January 20 to 23, heavier snow is expected in Murree, Galiyat and other northern hill stations including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Kohistan and parts of Azad Kashmir, raising the risk of road blockages.
  • Balochistan is forecast to see rain on January 21 and 22 with moderate to heavy snowfall in high-altitude districts such as Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, Qila Saifullah, Noshki, Harnai and Zhob.
  • Moderate to dense fog is likely across Punjab, upper Sindh and the KP plains during morning and night hours, and Karachi has a chance of thunderstorms and rain on January 22 and 23.
