Intel's Granite Rapids Xeon CPUs to Feature 480MB L3 Cache, a 50% Increase Over Predecessors

Despite the significant cache upgrade, Intel still trails behind AMD's Genoa-X processors, which offer up to 1,152 MB L3 cache.

  • Intel's upcoming Granite Rapids Xeon CPUs are expected to feature a significant cache upgrade, with up to 480MB of L3 cache, a 50% increase over the previous Emerald Rapids CPUs.
  • Despite the upgrade, Intel still lags behind AMD's Genoa-X 3D V-Cache processors, which offer up to 1,152 MB L3 cache.
  • Granite Rapids CPUs, expected to launch in the second half of 2024, will also offer increased core counts and higher clock speeds compared to their predecessors.
  • Intel's Granite Rapids Xeon chips are also expected to offer a 2.9x boost in AI inferencing, 2.8x boost in memory bandwidth and up to 3x better performance in AI workloads compared to the Sapphire Rapids Xeon CPUs.
  • AMD is expected to release its next-gen EPYC 'Turin' CPUs, based on the Zen 5 core architecture, later this year, which may further increase the L3 cache gap.
