INSV Tarini nears Goa to conclude women officers’ global circumnavigation

The flag-in ceremony at Mormugao Port will formally conclude the duo’s eight-month, 25,400-nautical-mile journey powered solely by sails.

Overview

  • The mission flagged off from Goa on October 2, 2024, and covered four continents, three oceans and three Great Capes in double-handed mode over eight months.
  • Lieutenant Commanders Roopa A and Dilna K braved cyclones, 50-knot winds, sub-zero temperatures and five-metre seas en route to earning ‘Cape Horner’ status.
  • Port calls at Fremantle, Lyttelton, Port Stanley and Cape Town featured diplomatic outreach with parliaments, naval cadets, schoolchildren and the Indian diaspora.
  • Collaborating with the National Institute of Oceanography and the Wildlife Institute of India, the crew gathered data on microplastics, ferrous content in seawater and large marine mammals.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to preside over the May 29 flag-in event, honoring the Indian Navy’s pursuit of maritime excellence and its Nari Shakti initiative.
