Insurers, NPS Pour Record Rs 1 Lakh Crore Into Indian Stocks in 2025

Regulatory relaxations plus rising assets under management are steering long-term domestic savings toward equities.

Overview

  • Insurance companies invested Rs 56,821 crore and NPS allocations reached Rs 51,308 crore year to date, far above their 2024 totals of Rs 23,062 crore and Rs 13,328 crore.
  • NSE data show NPS category inflows of Rs 37,409 crore for the three months to September 2025, the highest rolling figure since 2016.
  • Net NPS buying totaled Rs 68,678 crore in the first half of FY26, compared with Rs 7,447 crore in the same period a year earlier.
  • Domestic institutional investors collectively bought Rs 6.29 lakh crore of equities in 2025, with mutual funds contributing Rs 4.44 lakh crore, while banks sold Rs 16,941 crore and other financial institutions offloaded Rs 158 crore.
  • PFRDA and IRDAI rule changes enabled higher equity exposure, with additional context from EPFO’s expanding ETF book (Rs 1.97 trillion in FY23 to Rs 2.35 trillion in FY24) and a caveat that some figures reflect NSE-reported categories and pending EPFO disclosures.
