Instagram Sets Teen Accounts to PG-13 by Default, Tightens Parental Controls

Minors cannot switch out of the new setting without a parent’s approval.

Overview

  • The update begins rolling out today in the U.S., U.K., Australia and Canada, with a wider global launch planned early next year.
  • Instagram will age‑gate accounts that regularly share adult material or link to sites such as OnlyFans, blocking teens from following, viewing, messaging or seeing those accounts’ comments even if previously followed.
  • Teens’ search results will exclude a broader set of mature terms, including misspellings, and posts with strong language, risky stunts or marijuana paraphernalia will be hidden or not recommended.
  • A new parent‑controlled Limited Content setting further filters material and removes comment visibility and participation, with tighter limits on AI chats for teens planned next year.
  • Meta will use age‑prediction technology to place suspected under‑18s into protections, as safety researchers and regulators question effectiveness and call for greater transparency.
