Instagram Sets PG-13 Default for Teen Accounts, Rolling Out in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia

Changes to teen settings now require parental approval.

Overview

  • The rollout begins in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, with broader expansion planned for 2026 in Europe and Latin America.
  • Teens’ feeds, Stories, search and recommendations will exclude sexual nudity, drug use, graphic violence or gore, risky stunts and strong language.
  • Instagram will block teens from following or messaging accounts that regularly share age-inappropriate content and will remove those accounts from recommendations and search.
  • The same age bar will apply to Meta’s AI chats and tools, and an optional “Limited Content” mode lets parents further filter posts and disable comments.
  • Meta will use age-prediction technology to apply protections even when users claim to be adults, tightening enforcement of the new default.
