Instagram Rolls Out Repost, Instagram Map and Friends Tab Globally

Adam Mosseri emphasized that users must explicitly opt in twice before their location appears on the map

Overview

  • Instagram’s integrated Repost button lets users share public posts and reels to their feed and a new “Reposts” tab with automatic credit to original authors
  • The optional Instagram Map shows a user’s last active location to selected friends only, is off by default and offers Close Friends, Ghost Mode and venue-specific sharing controls
  • A new “Friends” tab in Reels curates videos that contacts have recently liked, commented on or reshared to boost social discovery
  • Users can disable reposting on their own public posts and location sharing requires two-step consent by design, a privacy safeguard highlighted by CEO Adam Mosseri
  • The August 6 launch is being deployed in stages across regions with continued user feedback guiding further refinements
