Instagram Developing New App to Compete with Twitter

Meta is building a Twitter competitor based on Instagram called "Project 92" that could publicly launch as "Threads"
The app will use Instagram's account system to automatically populate user information
The app seeks to prioritize safety, ease of use, and reliability as an alternative to Twitter
The app will allow posts of up to 500 characters, photos, videos up to 5 minutes, and engagement through likes, replies, and reposts
Meta began developing the app in January and it will be integrated with the decentralized social media protocol ActivityPub
