Overview
- Instagram released the Edits desktop app for macOS on Thursday with a full multi-track timeline, keyframes, precise audio waveforms, advanced color-grading tools, and watermark-free 4K exports for horizontal and vertical video.
- The app supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which lets creators connect third-party AI agents — including Meta’s Muse — to make rough cuts, run tool calls, and hand projects back for manual refinement.
- Edits for Mac requires an Apple silicon Mac (M1 or later) and currently has no Windows or Linux versions, and it cannot yet edit the same project across mobile and desktop even though saved audio and text styles do sync.
- Creators can publish finished videos directly from the desktop editor to Instagram with native tagging and location features, removing the previous step of moving files between desktop and phone before posting.
- Meta frames the release as a push to support larger creator workflows and to compete with CapCut; the company plans weekly Mac updates and is working on cross-device project sync, a change that could deepen creator ties to Instagram’s ecosystem.
