Instacart Launches Clementine AI Shopping Assistant

Using Instacart’s catalog and live store inventory, the tool builds ready-to-buy grocery carts with advertising planned cautiously for later this year.

Overview

  • The company, which launched Clementine on Sept. 9, made the conversational assistant broadly available to U.S. and Canadian Instacart users through the app and website.
  • Clementine turns plain-language prompts, photos of lists or recipes into ready-to-buy carts and tailors suggestions to household preferences and past purchases.
  • Instacart also introduced Cart Assistant, a white-label version that is live at Food Bazaar, Heritage Grocers Group and Woodman’s and will roll out to regional partners such as Aldi U.S. and Stew Leonard’s.
  • All of the assistants run on Instacart’s grocery data — about 1.6 billion lifetime orders, a multibillion-item catalog and millions of daily inventory signals — which the company says is needed to match recommendations to what is actually on store shelves.
  • Early engagement shows Clementine-assisted orders carry larger baskets, Instacart has linked the assistant to external models like Gemini, Claude and ChatGPT, and the firm says it will add ads slowly to protect trust and accuracy.
