INSS Backlog Rises for Second Month, Reaches 2.63 Million in August

Officials cite operational strains from a strike as a key driver.

Overview

  • Pending requests increased by about 65,200 from July to August, according to the Ministry of Social Security.
  • August’s queue totaled 2,626,779, the highest since April, based on the official transparency portal.
  • Disability benefits account for about 1.28 million of the backlog, followed by 795,000 assistencial/BLE benefits, 285,000 retirements, 143,000 maternity claims, and 117,000 pensions and reclusion.
  • The 2025 trend shows a peak in March at 2.707 million, a drop through June to 2.443 million, then renewed growth in July and August.
  • Reporting also notes wider use of Atestemed, which has increased submissions while reducing costs by allowing up to 180 days of leave without in-person exams and avoiding retroactive payments.
