Insee Finds Cyberviolence Widespread in French Secondary Schools

The new study highlights a sharp exposure of girls to humiliating content spread online in connection with school life.

  • Across the 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 school years, 28% of middle-schoolers and 23% of high-schoolers reported at least one incident linked to school.
  • Incidents most commonly involved insults, mockery, hurtful nicknames or public humiliation on social media, affecting 21% of collégiens and 15% of lycéens.
  • Girls were more frequently targeted, with 31% of collégiennes and 25% of lycéennes reporting cyberviolence, including greater exposure to humiliating rumors, photos or videos.
  • The findings place online attacks within a wider climate of verbal aggression at school, with 66% of middle-schoolers and 51% of high-schoolers reporting verbal assaults online or offline.
  • In the broader population, cyberviolence has increased in recent years, affecting 3.2% of adults in 2022, with women more often victimized.
