Overview

  • Russia handed over INS Tamal, the second Tushil-class frigate, at Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad on July 2 under Project 11356.
  • The warship successfully completed sea trials monitored by Indian Navy teams prior to the official delivery.
  • Its propulsion system comprises Ukrainian-made M7N gas turbines supplied by Ukroboronprom and built by Zorya-Mashproekt in Mykolaiv.
  • INS Tamal traces back to a 2018 government-to-government agreement to complete two unfinished Russian frigates stalled after the Crimea crisis.
  • INS Tamal will join the Western Naval Command in September, with the remaining Project 11356 frigates set for domestic construction by late 2026 as part of Make in India.
