INS Nistar Leads India’s First Overseas DSRV Matings, Three-Asset Rescue at XPR-25

The Singapore-hosted drills highlighted new interoperability for India’s submarine rescue unit in the South China Sea.

Overview

  • India’s Submarine Rescue Unit (East) embarked on INS Nistar performed successful dockings on three consecutive days during the sea phase of XPR-25.
  • On September 23, the Tiger X DSRV conducted its first dive outside the Indian Ocean Region, mating with ROK Navy submarine Shin Dol-Seok and later RSN submarine RSS Invincible.
  • A synchronized rescue on September 25 saw INS Nistar locate and relay data to MV Swift Rescue and JS Chiyoda in what participants described as the first three-asset rescue in Pacific Reach history.
  • XPR-25 ran from September 15 to 25 with shore and sea phases and participation reported from more than 40 nations.
  • The deployment was the first operational outing for the indigenously built diving support vessel INS Nistar following its July commissioning.
