INS Nistar Delivered to Indian Navy, Commissioning Scheduled for July 18

The upcoming commissioning will bring the indigenously built vessel into service to bolster submarine rescue readiness on India’s east coast.

Overview

  • Hindustan Shipyard Limited delivered the vessel on July 8 at Visakhapatnam, underlining the Make in India push that engaged 120 MSMEs to achieve over 80% domestic content.
  • Designed and built to Indian Register of Shipping standards, INS Nistar spans 118 meters and displaces nearly 10,000 tonnes.
  • It is equipped for saturation diving to 300 meters, remotely operated vehicles that support salvage operations up to 1,000 meters, and a 15-tonne subsea crane.
  • The ship serves as the mother ship for the Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel, offers helicopter support, an onboard hospital with ICU and hyperbaric facilities, and has an endurance exceeding 60 days.
  • Commissioning on July 18 will integrate INS Nistar into the Eastern Naval Command, enhancing deep-sea rescue and salvage capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region.
