Overview
- London Fire Brigade investigators told the inquest the most probable cause was a firework landing in a recycling bin containing cardboard, with the firework’s origin unknown.
- Senior Coroner Lydia Brown recorded accidental deaths for all six victims and the Metropolitan Police reported no third‑party involvement, criminality or negligence.
- Home Office pathologist Dr Ashley Fegan‑Earl said all six died from inhalation of fire fumes and would have been overcome in no more than a few minutes.
- The home had no working smoke alarm and both front and back doors were left open for Diwali, which investigators said created a chimney effect that accelerated smoke spread; additional fireworks were found stored in cardboard boxes inside.
- The blaze required 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters and the London Fire Brigade says it will work with communities to raise awareness of fireworks risks and home fire‑safety measures.
