Inquest Rules Gym Accident That Killed UEA Student Mohammed Farraj a Tragic Accident

The 21-year-old medical student died in October 2024 after a Smith machine bar fell on his head due to improperly adjusted safety stops and equipment misuse.

Mohammed Farraj, a 21-year-old medical student, died at the University of East Anglia Sportspark gym in October 2024 during a weightlifting exercise.
An inquest concluded on March 26, 2025, ruling the death a tragic accident caused by improperly adjusted safety stops and the use of an unsuitable aerobic step.
The Smith machine's safety stops had been left at the lowest position, and the aerobic step used by Farraj tipped, causing the bar to fall and fatally injure him.
Gym staff have since added safety warnings to the Smith machine and reviewed protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Farraj, a fitness enthusiast training for an Ironman triathlon, was remembered by his family and community as a dedicated and health-conscious individual.
