Inquest Records Road Traffic Collision in Death of 18-Year-Old Boxer

The coroner found the HGV driver had only one to two seconds to react, leaving no opportunity to avoid the collision.

Overview

  • Preston Coroner's Court concluded Leo Mountain died from multiple trauma after being struck on the A623 Bay Gateway on April 20.
  • Dash-cam footage and the lorry driver’s account showed he was travelling at the 40 mph limit and saw an object only one to two seconds before impact.
  • The driver described the obstacle as resembling a “black bin bag,” with insufficient time to recognise a person or take evasive action.
  • The coroner noted Leo had high levels of alcohol, having left a taxi and later lying in the carriageway on a poorly lit stretch between Mellishaw Lane and Northgate.
  • Area Coroner Emma Mather expressed condolences to the family and said the incident has also had a significant impact on the driver, as friends and boxing clubs paid tribute to the young champion.
