Inquest Opens Into Death of 24-Year-Old Convicted Sex Offender at HMP Rochester

Overview

• Jacob Bean was discovered unresponsive in his cell after returning from a shower at the Category C prison in Kent.
• Emergency responders attempted to revive him and he was pronounced dead shortly after 12:30pm on September 7.
• A week earlier he reported breathing difficulties and chest pain, was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital, and returned to custody the next day.
• The Prison Service said the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct a standard deaths-in-custody investigation.
• Bean had been jailed for five-and-a-half years last November for grooming a 10-year-old, having pleaded guilty to multiple child sex offences.
