Inquest Into Ian Huntley’s Death Suspended While Murder Trial Prepares

The coroner said the inquest will remain on hold to avoid prejudicing the criminal proceedings.

Overview

  • Prison officials say Huntley was allegedly struck with a metal bar in a workshop at HMP Frankland on February 26 and was rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
  • Huntley died in hospital on March 7 after nine days on life support, and a post-mortem by Dr Jennifer Bolton gave a provisional cause of death as blunt head injury.
  • A fellow inmate, Anthony Russell, has been charged with murder and a criminal trial is scheduled to start on November 23.
  • Senior Coroner Jeremy Chipperfield adjourned the inquest to a brief hearing on December 16 and said it cannot resume until the trial’s outcome and 'shape' are known.
  • Psychiatric assessments have been carried out for both prosecution and defence and the pause in the inquest is meant to prevent legal prejudice while the criminal case proceeds.
