Inquest Finds Dublin Mother Died by Electrocution From Charging Phone in Bath

A Dublin coroner ruled death by misadventure following evidence that a charging phone caused a fatal bath electrocution.

Overview

  • State pathologist Heidi Okkers reported electrocution-type and full-thickness burns and ruled out medical conditions or alcohol and drugs as contributing factors.
  • Forensic engineer Paul Collins told the inquest that a current of about 2 amps, typical of phone chargers, is more than enough to kill.
  • Husband Joe O’Gorman testified he found an iPhone and cable in the water, received a small shock while lifting his wife, and noted a three‑metre extension lead running from a bedroom socket.
  • O’Gorman urged prominent warnings on device packaging and criticised waterproof marketing that he said gives a false sense of safety near water when devices are charging.
  • Coroner Cróna Gallagher said she will consider which parties to notify about the safety concerns raised and recorded a formal verdict of misadventure.
