- On May 26, Gardiner’s white Volkswagen Golf R estate hit a kerb on the A34 near Gatley, lost control and struck a tree before rolling off the road
- He was taken to Salford Royal Hospital with serious head injuries and died of a devastating brain injury three days later on May 29
- At the June 11 opening hearing at Stockport coroner’s court, officer Andrew Levett confirmed the cause of death and the assistant coroner adjourned a full inquest until October 13
- Gardiner appeared with his mother Jo on BBC’s Race Across the World in 2020 and had been working as a landscape gardener on Scotland’s west coast
