INPE Reports Sharp Fall in Amazon Deforestation Alerts, Lowest Since 2016

Overview

• INPE’s near-real-time Deter system recorded a 36.9% drop in Amazon alerts to 2,874 km² for the Aug 2025–Jul 2026 cycle, the lowest level in the Deter series that began in 2016.
• The Cerrado saw a smaller decline of 7.8% to 5,119.46 km² and finished this cycle with a larger alerted area than the Amazon.
• Most large Amazon states reported smaller alert areas, with Pará at 987.27 km², Mato Grosso down 49% to 834.41 km², and Amazonas down 46.7% to 433.9 km² while Roraima bucked the trend with a 32.5% increase to 272.6 km².
• INPE also released Prodes results for other biomes showing big falls in Caatinga (−34.3%), Mata Atlântica (−15.32%, its lowest since 2001) and Pampa (−41.7%), and officials stressed that Prodes’ November Amazon and Cerrado figures use a different, more detailed method than Deter.
• Observers including the Observatório do Clima note the Deter decline continues a multi-year downward trend and say the drop will affect Brazil’s international climate image and enforcement focus, with the official Prodes tally and ongoing satellite-guided embargoes set to determine the policy and trade implications.
