Innsbruck/Igls Sliding Track Fails Safety Approval, World Cups at Risk

A re-inspection by IBSF and FIL is scheduled for Nov. 14–16 following test runs that flagged an unsafe section between curves 13 and 14.

Overview

  • The rebuilt lower third of the Olympia Eiskanal has not been homologated after test runs were aborted for drive‑technical reasons.
  • The critical area from curve 13 to the exit of curve 14 showed loss of control risk, prompting temporary measures including ice re‑profiling and a wooden plank to narrow the curve‑14 entry.
  • Organizers say they are working with the international federations and the track operator to implement rapid adjustments before the next approval attempt.
  • The bob and skeleton World Cup set for Nov. 28–30 and the luge events on Dec. 6–7 are in jeopardy, with athletes warning full‑start speeds would be too dangerous after prior runs were about 30 km/h slower.
  • Teams have shifted training to Altenberg as the venue faces scrutiny over a 20‑month, roughly €30 million renovation that added a women’s start, a new finish house, and a longer runout.
