Innsbruck/Igls Sliding Track Denied Approval After Rebuild, Putting World Cups in Doubt

A reinspection from November 14 to 16 will decide if rapid fixes to the hazardous curve 13–14 meet safety standards.

Overview

  • Test runs were halted after driving-technical problems in the rebuilt lower section, with the entry to curve 14 deemed too wide and a wooden plank installed to force a safer line.
  • International federations FIL and IBSF, together with Austria’s federations and operator Olympia World, are rushing structural adjustments to address the risk.
  • The next official homologation check is scheduled for November 14–16 in Innsbruck.
  • Without approval, the bob and skeleton World Cup slated for November 28–30 and the luge World Cup on December 6–7 cannot proceed as planned.
  • The track underwent a roughly 20‑month renovation costing nearly €30 million that redesigned the lower third, extended the outflow and added a women’s start, yet athletes warn full-height runs remain too dangerous.
