Inmet Issues Wide Storm Alerts Across Southern and Southeastern Brazil

Record heat plus a strengthening frontal system is driving convective storms, keeping major cities at elevated lightning risk.

Overview

  • An orange, danger-level warning covers all of Rio Grande do Sul on Friday with 50–100 mm of rain possible, 60–100 km/h wind gusts and a risk of hail, according to Inmet.
  • Inmet also flagged Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais for storms with up to 50 mm/day as high temperatures persist across the region.
  • A separate Inmet alert places 313 municipalities in Paraná under risk for storms with gusts up to 60 km/h and possible hail.
  • Rio de Janeiro’s West Zone saw localized flooding on Thursday, and BRT Line 17 was temporarily suspended due to water accumulation, with city crews deployed to affected points.
  • INPE reported a more than 250% jump in lightning over São Paulo in early January versus 2025, linking the surge to record heat and El Niño conditions.
