Inmet Issues Red Alert for Heat Wave in Centre‑West and Southeast

A separate low‑pressure system may form an extratropical cyclone late in the period, raising the risk of heavy rain and damaging winds across the South.

Overview

  • Inmet issued a red (greatest danger) alert effective Saturday through Wednesday for a wave of heat that will push many locations in Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná and São Paulo and parts of Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro well above seasonal norms.
  • Temperatures are forecast to exceed 40°C in numerous hotspots in the Pantanal and Centro‑West, including Corumbá, Porto Murtinho, Poconé, Cuiabá and Rondonópolis, with the peak heat expected into early next week.
  • The Ministry of Health and local Defesa Civils have warned about dehydration, heat exhaustion and aggravated chronic illnesses and advised hydration, limiting sun exposure and extra care for the elderly, children and outdoor workers.
  • Separately, a low‑pressure area over northern Argentina and Paraguay is transporting moisture into Rio Grande do Sul and is likely to organize into an extratropical cyclone around Sept. 29–30, which could produce heavy rain, gusts above 80–90 km/h and localized totals over 100 mm.
  • Forecasters say a frontal system tied to the cyclone should begin to cool some heat‑affected areas after Sept. 30, but model updates could change local warnings so residents should follow Defesa Civil and Inmet bulletins for real‑time guidance.
