Inmet Issues Orange Wind Warning for Rio and São Paulo

A frontal system tied to an extratropical cyclone will drive gusts up to 100 km/h and has led authorities to close parks, send emergency alerts, and report early damage and a fatality.

Overview

  • Inmet issued an orange vendaval warning on Friday for parts of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, valid from 12:00 to 23:59, forecasting gusts of 60–100 km/h and covering 69 municipalities.
  • The institute says strong gusts can topple trees, rip off roofs and harm buildings and crops, and it recommends staying in protected locations and avoiding shelter under trees.
  • Rio's municipal government closed public parks and pushed cellphone alerts, and the city is operating at stage 2 precautions while Defesa Civil and Corpo de Bombeiros stand ready to respond.
  • Local impacts have already been reported in Ribeirão Preto, where a 70 km/h gust damaged roofs, blocked access to Hospital Santa Lydia with a fallen tree, forced generator use and was linked to one fatality.
  • High winds have previously disrupted flights, trains and power in the region, so authorities warn of cascading effects on airports, transit and electricity and advise residents to call Defesa Civil at 199 or Corpo de Bombeiros at 193 for emergencies.
