Overview

  • Surgeons at McGann Hospital removed a mobile phone measuring about 1 by 3 inches from Daulat Yaane’s stomach on July 8 after a second x-ray revealed the concealed device.
  • Yaane, serving a 10-year sentence with a fine, was transferred to Shivamogga Central Prison on June 15 and initially told staff he had swallowed a stone.
  • The recovered handset was handed to prison authorities after surgery and Chief Superintendent Dr. P. Ranganath lodged a formal complaint with Tunga Police over the breach.
  • Investigators are probing prison security protocols to determine how the inmate managed to smuggle in the phone.
  • Yaane remains tightlipped about his motive and is reported to be recovering well post-operation.
