Overview
- Martin Charest pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in a Sept-Îles, Que., court on Sept. 25, 2025.
- Charest said in court, “I killed Robert Pickton for the victims,” and claimed Pickton bragged about his crimes and said he would reoffend if released.
- He was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.
- A statement of facts said Charest locked himself in a room with Pickton, manipulated the door lock, guards deployed gas, and Charest then stabbed him with a broken broom handle as he lay on the floor.
- Pickton, attacked on May 19, 2024, died 12 days later of blunt polytrauma, and a Correctional Service Canada board later recommended tighter control over items that can be weaponized.
